Abstract


The retailing environment is undergoing major changes that are impacting the industry, consumers and shopping as we know it.  The Internet has allowed new entrants and has transformed retailing.  While Walmart is still the biggest brick and mortar retailer in the world, Amazon.com is a dominant force in online retail and technological advances.   Department stores are closing anchor stores which has an impact the viability of malls.  As online and alternative retail formats grow, many traditional retailers are struggling.  Malls throughout the U.S. are experiencing high vacancy rates.  These changes present opportunities and challenges.  This paper explores several major shifts that affect retailing, including the growth of omni-channel retailing, the Internet of Things, the sharing economy, preference for experiences, technology advancements and the retailization of the world.
