Abstract

One of the goals of a quality business education is to prepare students for their professional careers by employing relevant, practice-oriented experiences in the classroom.  The traditional classroom can adequately provide knowledge, concepts and tools, but it is a challenging environment for providing practice-oriented experiences.  A variety of tools, such as case studies, industry projects, and simulations, have been used to make the traditional classroom more relevant.  This workshop explores the use of a next generation comprehensive simulation that has been successfully used in varied business disciplines.  These disciplines include operations management, quantitative literacy, leadership, information technology, marketing, and analytics.

The workshop identifies the short-comings of many current business simulations and provides insight into how a next-generation addresses these shortcomings.  The workshop presents a next-generation simulation, ScrimmageSIM, and identifies a number of key features of the software, including its ERP system design, multiple business scenarios, and flexible design.  The workshop explores how these features improve the ability of the simulation to support and reinforce the knowledge, tools and concepts taught in the traditional business classroom.  The workshop will conclude with a demonstration of the software, a look at the supporting materials review of different methods of integrating the simulation into a course.
