Abstract

Twitter, an internet microblogging platform, offers a fruitful tool for faculty to encourage students to reflect and engage with course material.  The intrinsic character restriction of Twitter forces students to be economical with their writing, and its public nature offers an opportunity for students to interact with public figures and current events.  This paper discusses several methods faculty can use to leverage Twitter in an introductory economics classroom, including daily reactions, required student interactions, news analysis, and live-tweeting of films or events.  Automation techniques, use of the Twitter API, accessibility concerns, dealing with “trolls,†and other best practices are also considered.
