Abstract

A growing research base underscores the positive impact that individually defined career guidance efforts have on successful professional development. Ideally, students explore career choices by matching a realization of their competencies and personal preferences with an occupation’s profile of skill requirements, duties, and outlook. In reality, the process of self knowledge exploration and career discovery is often disjointed.  Introduction to Business (ITB) courses offered by institutes of high education introduce students to business fundamentals and develop a broad base in specific areas of business including accounting, finance, management, technology, and marketing. Course content often explores specific career opportunities within a business discipline, or as an entrepreneur. This presentation proposes a methodology that utilizes the ITB course as a tool for professional development of undergraduate students by combining the examination of an individual’s personal profile with specific business career opportunities.
